SETTING THE SCENE
Between Raglan, Waikato’s famous surf beach and Oxford Falls in New South Wales is approximately 2,280 km of water. Given that Trans-Tasman data had to flow the requirement was to create a super beach head in New Zealand to receive the subterranean cable.
All bends, accents, decants or changes in direction for the duct reticulation had to be managed. Mainly to ensure the final duct laid would be free of bends and would fall below a 3 m internal radius. Project management required coordination with beach users and the surf school while at the same time working on a narrow, access-constrained work site. While being ever mindful of the changing tides.
This project delivered up to 20Tb/s over a two fibre pair submarine system. It involved relocating the existing sub-sea cable to the new manhole in installing 2 km of 3 x 63 mm duct, two manholes, 3.3 x 2.2 x 3m beach manhole, 5 x 1.5 m diameter cable pits and a storm water catch pit.
Bridge crossings had to be drilled underneath to ensure cable security while at the same time contributing to complexity of the drill shot. Hauling the armoured cable from the beach manhole to the cable landing station was part of the job. Like the ebb and flow of the oceans there were many changes to work requirements with were managed promptly. A letter of commendation at works end completed the assignment.
