Our Story

Safeguarding New Zealand’s Fibre Future

Determined to deliver a more agile and robust response, Spark and Vocus formed their own telecommunications construction company in early 2015. Connect 8 was born.

In creating this joint venture, Connect 8 acquired the construction division of Vocus New Zealand, including the management and project teams that designed and constructed Vocus’ 4,200Km network. This nationwide network of project teams provides an unprecedented flexibility and speed of construction and delivery.

In late 2016, Spark bought the remaining 50% of the joint venture from Vocus in order to secure the continued capability for its ongoing fibre replacement programme and for expansion of its Optical Transport Network (OTN). As a result, Connect 8 became a wholly owned subsidiary of Spark.

Connect 8 has become New Zealand’s premier fibre optic network construction contractor. By leveraging our existing skills and delivering the innovation and cost effective solutions that all businesses desire, Connect 8 has also bridged into the areas of water, power, and gas – becoming a full service provider to the buried infrastructure industry.

Management Team

  • Ray O’Regan

    Chief Executive

    Ray is an experienced and proven business leader who has worked in the underground utilities and telecommunication sector for more than 20 years. In his career, Ray has steadily progressed through the ranks by effectively managing the commercial outcomes, applying strong negotiation skills and having a genuine commitment to his employees’ success to deliver exceptional results.

    Ray was appointed CEO in March 2015 and has steered the group through innumerable challenges whilst maintaining trust, loyalty and engagement. Driven by the lessons learned in the field, Ray has created an environment that honours the company values and provides innovative solutions for customers to ensure the continued success of Connect 8 Ltd.

  • Jeff Thomson

    Financial Controller

    Jeff is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of commercial experience in a variety of industries. He has held a number of senior management roles and has strong knowledge on governance, tax, forecasting and reporting. He has mastered the art of critical thinking and is able to provide an array of information to the management team to make informed business decisions.

    Since joining Connect 8 Ltd in January 2016, Jeff has implemented best practices and controls and transformed the finance function to further strengthen the business. He leads the day-to-day finance operations and focuses on developing a high performing team, finding pragmatic solutions to business issues and driving the strategy and overall maturity of the business.

  • George Pirie

    GM - Infrastructure

    George has spent over 27 years in the utility industry, managing and delivering results for various major projects and maintenance contracts. He has extensive experience in distribution, transmission, fibre optics, water and gas in different markets across Europe and Australasia. George’s diverse skills and ability to negotiate with stakeholders has resulted in a proven track record of successfully and safely delivering projects while being fully compliant with environmental and quality standards.

    George is committed to providing clients with the outcomes they need, with competitive pricing, while ensuring that both the client and company expectations are met.

  • Barry Miller

    GM - Telecommunications

    With an engineering background, Barry found his niche in the telecommunications arena by working at organisations like Vodafone, TelstraClear and Saturn Communications. He has built over 20 years of expertise through designing, constructing, operating and repairing complex networks and technologies. Barry is highly regarded for his profound knowledge of the industry and far reaching abilities in managed services, vendor management and service delivery.

    Barry has extensive experience working with customers by focusing on service excellence, innovation, programme management and strategic planning. He is committed to implementing effective changes that brings better customer service and supports a customer focused and results driven team.

  • Jonathan Berry

    GM - Mobile

    Jonathan has managed many multi-million-dollar programmes of work in the mobile technology arena, globally. During his 20-year tenure, he has a long-standing record for successfully delivering complex projects for organisations such as Ericsson, Downer, Huawei and Vodafone. Backed with formal engineering systems and project management training, Jonathan has been at the heart of the mobile technology advancements right from the implementation of 2G, 3G and now 4G+ networks.

    At Connect 8 Ltd, Jonathan has established the mobile group, which has hit the ground running with over 130 wireless broadband upgrades completed within 6 months. His highly experienced team are at the forefront of mobile networks deployment and have swiftly gained a solid reputation in the market.

 

Governance

  • Rajesh Singh

    Director

    Rajesh Singh is a non-executive director of Connect 8, and was instrumental in the establishment of the development of the joint venture concept between Vocus and Spark. He is currently the GM Value Management at Spark New Zealand and has held several roles since joining Spark.

    Prior to joining this, he held several senior leadership and director roles within the telecommunications industry in South Africa, where he migrated from in 2009. He has worked in IT and telecommunications for 18 years since graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of South Africa.

  • David Havercroft

    Chairman of the Board

    David Havercroft is a non-executive director of Connect 8, and joined the board in December 2016 when Spark took full ownership of the company. Until recently, David was Spark’s Chief Transformation Officer, and prior to that was the Chief Operating Officer.

    Prior to joining Spark in 2009, he held senior leadership positions in other large technology and telecommunications companies including IBM, KPN BASE, Cable and Wireless, and British Telecom.

Zero Harm

Zero Harm is embedded in Connect 8’s culture and is fundamental to the company’s future success. Zero Harm means sustaining a work environment that both supports the health and safety of our people, other contractors, and the general public, and minimises the impact our business has on the environment.

Compliance with our health, safety and environmental (HSE) commitments is monitored by the Connect 8 HSE Committee. Given the company stance toward Zero Harm, all HSE Committee members have an responsibility to reinforce an employee’s right to refuse to undertake an activity where they believe their safety, or another person’s, is at undue risk.
